On May 2, 2024, the Gemini API Additional Terms of Service will be updated and projects with linked Cloud Billing accounts will be billed for Gemini API requests. We understand this may have an impact on your organization's planning, so we’ve provided details below to help you along.

Note: This notice is for the Gemini API from Google AI for Developers (referred to as Generative Language API in the Cloud Console) and does not relate to the Vertex AI Gemini API.

What do you need to know? On May 2, 2024, the following changes will take effect:

The Gemini API Terms of Service governing your use of Gemini API and Google AI Studio will be updated. Preview the new Terms. Pay-as-you-go pricing for the Gemini API will be introduced. You still won’t be billed for your interactions with Gemini models directly within Google AI Studio.

If you use Gemini API from a project that has billing disabled, you can still use Gemini API free of charge, without the benefits available in our paid plan.

If you use Gemini API from a project that has billing enabled, your use will be subject to the pay-as-you-go pricing tier with the benefits available in our paid plan.

What do you need to do? If you agree to the new terms, no further action is needed. Otherwise, you should stop using Gemini API and Google AI Studio. If you currently use Gemini API and do not wish to be billed, please ensure you are only using an API key from a Cloud Project that has billing disabled before May 2, 2024. Because disabling billing from an existing project can stop other billable services, you may want to create a separate project with billing disabled only for use with Gemini API.
