語源 / Etymology

ラテン語の ascendere（上る、登る）に由来する。**ad-**（～へ）と scandere（登る）が組み合わさった語で、14世紀頃に古フランス語 ascendant を経て英語に入った。もともと占星術の用語として、東の地平線に昇る星座を指す言葉として使われ、やがて「優勢な」「支配的な」という一般的な意味にも広がった。
