ebb（動詞・名詞）：潮が引くこと。また、比喩的に勢い・力・感情などが徐々に衰えること、弱まること。

古英語の ebba（引き潮）に由来し、ゲルマン祖語の abjon（離れていく）から派生した。原義は「水が引く」という物理的な現象を指していたが、中英語の時代から「力や感情が衰える」という比喩的な意味でも広く使われるようになった。

William Shakespeare『Julius Caesar』 — 有名な一節 "There is a tide in the affairs of men, which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune; omitted, all the voyage of their life is bound in shallows and in miseries." において、ebb と対になる潮の満ち引きの比喩が人生の好機と衰退を象徴している。
Matthew Arnold『Dover Beach』 — 海の引き潮（ebb）が信仰の衰退の比喩として用いられ、"the melancholy, long, withdrawing roar" という表現で潮が引く音が描写されている。
