語源 / Etymology

動詞 enlarge に名詞を作る接尾辞 -ment が付いた語。enlarge はフランス語の enlargier に由来し、en-（～にする）と large（大きい）の組み合わせから成る。large 自体はラテン語の largus（豊かな、広い）に遡る。16世紀頃から英語で広く使われるようになり、特に写真技術の発展以降、「写真の引き伸ばし」という意味でも定着した。
