語源 / Etymology

古英語の hēahþu に由来し、「高い状態」を意味する。これはゲルマン祖語の hauhiþō から派生したもので、形容詞 high（高い）と同じ語根を持つ。つまり、high の名詞形として発展した語である。現代英語のつづりでは -ght で終わるが、発音は /haɪt/ であり、gh は発音されない。

文学作品での使用例 / Literary Usage

Emily Brontë『Wuthering Heights』（嵐が丘） — タイトルそのものに Heights が使われており、ヨークシャーの荒涼とした高台にある屋敷を指している。
