語源 / Etymology

ギリシャ語の idiōmatikos（独自の、特有の）に由来し、さらに idiōma（独自の表現、特質）から派生している。idios（自分自身の、私的な）が根本にある語で、ある言語や集団に「固有の」表現方法という意味を持つようになった。英語には17世紀頃にラテン語を経由して入ってきた。
