語源 / Etymology

ラテン語の jurisprudens に由来する。jus（法、権利）の属格 juris と、prudens（賢い、精通した）が組み合わさった語である。prudens はさらに providens（先を見通す）の短縮形で、つまり「法を見通す知恵を持つ者」という意味が原義にある。16世紀頃から英語に取り入れられ、法律の学問的知識を備えた人物を表す語として用いられてきた。
