語源 / Etymology

ギリシャ語の mikros（小さい）と skopein（見る）を組み合わせた近代ラテン語 microscopium に由来する。17世紀初頭、オランダやイタリアで初期の顕微鏡が発明された時期に、この語が科学用語として広まった。「小さいものを見る道具」という意味がそのまま語源に反映されている。

Robert Hooke の Micrographia（1665年）は、顕微鏡による観察記録の先駆的な著作であり、microscope という語が科学文献に定着するきっかけとなった。
