語源 / Etymology

ラテン語の prae（前に）と eminēre（突き出る、際立つ）に由来します。中世ラテン語の praeeminentia を経て、15世紀頃に英語に取り入れられました。文字通りには「他よりも前に突き出ている状態」を意味し、そこから「卓越、優位」という意味が生まれました。綴りは pre-eminence とハイフン付きで書かれることもあります。
