語源 / Etymology

story（物語）と line（線、筋）を組み合わせた複合語。story は古フランス語の estorie に由来し、さらにラテン語の historia（歴史、物語）に遡る。line は「一本の筋道」という意味で、物語の流れや展開を一本の線に見立てた表現。19世紀頃から使われ始め、特に演劇や小説の分野で広まった。
