ラテン語の suspicio（疑い、不信）に由来し、suspicere（下から見上げる、疑いの目で見る）から派生した。**sub-**（下から）と specere（見る）の組み合わせで、「下から密かに見上げる」という原義が「疑いの目で見る」という意味に発展した。古フランス語 suspeçon を経て、中英語に入った。
