語源 Etymology

形容詞としての utter は、古英語の ūtera（外側の、より遠い）に由来し、ūt（外へ）の比較級にあたる。もともと「最も外側の」という空間的な意味だったが、次第に「完全な、徹底的な」という強調の意味へと変化した。

動詞としての utter は、中英語の uttren に由来し、「外に出す」という意味から「言葉を発する」へと発展した。オランダ語の uiten（表現する）とも関連がある。
