Since the birth of our field in the 1950 ’ s, we have freely reimplemented each others ’ APIs. This practice was critical to the meteoric success of computer technology. I am active in the effort to preserve this freedom [CompSci17], and I encourage you to join me. It is crucial to the continued health of our profession that we retain the right to reimplement each others ’ APIs.
