語源 / Etymology

ラテン語の **ad-**（〜へ）と clima（気候）に由来する。フランス語の acclimater（気候に慣らす）を経て、18世紀頃に英語に取り入れられた。もともとは気候への適応を意味していたが、現在ではより広く、あらゆる新しい環境や状況への順応を指すようになった。

文学作品での使用例 / Literary Usage

ジャック・ロンドンの『The Call of the Wild』（野性の呼び声、1903年）では、飼い犬バックがアラスカの過酷な環境に順応していく過程が描かれ、acclimationの概念が物語の中心にある。
ジョン・クラカワーの『Into Thin Air』（空へ、1997年）では、エベレスト登山における高地への acclimation の重要性が繰り返し語られている。
