語源 / Etymology

ラテン語の comprehensibilis に由来し、comprehendere（つかむ、理解する）から派生した語。**com-**（共に、完全に）と prehendere（つかむ）が組み合わさっている。16世紀頃から英語で使われるようになり、「知的に把握できる」という意味で定着した。反意語の incomprehensible（理解できない）もよく使われる。

文学作品での使用例 / Literary Usage

John Locke の An Essay Concerning Human Understanding（1689年）では、人間の知識と理解の限界を論じる中で comprehensible が繰り返し用いられている。
Charles Darwin の On the Origin of Species（1859年）では、自然界の複雑な仕組みを読者にとって comprehensible な形で説明しようとする姿勢が見られる。
George Orwell は明晰な文章を重視し、エッセイ Politics and the English Language（1946年）の中で、文章は常に comprehensible であるべきだと主張した。
