語源 / Etymology

ラテン語の intelligibilis に由来し、これは intelligere（理解する）から派生した語である。intelligere は inter（〜の間で）と legere（選ぶ、読む）の組み合わせで、「物事の中から意味を読み取る」という原義を持つ。14世紀頃に英語に取り入れられ、「理解可能な」「明瞭な」という意味で使われるようになった。

文学作品での用例 / Literary Usage

John Locke の An Essay Concerning Human Understanding（1689年）では、人間の認識と理解の限界について論じる中で intelligible が繰り返し用いられ、「知性によって把握可能な」という哲学的な意味合いで使われている。
Immanuel Kant の英訳著作においても、感覚的世界（sensible world）と対比される「叡智的世界」（intelligible world）という哲学用語として頻出する。
George Orwell の Politics and the English Language（1946年）では、明瞭で intelligible な文章を書くことの重要性が強調されている。
