語源 / Etymology

ギリシャ語の dikhotomia に由来し、dikho-（二つに）と -tomia（切ること、temnein = 切る）から成る。もともとは「二つに切り分けること」を意味し、16世紀に英語に取り入れられた。論理学や天文学で使われ始め、やがて日常的に「対立する二つのもの」を表す語として広まった。
