語源 / Etymology

16世紀のフランス語 émotion に由来し、さらにラテン語の emovere（外へ動かす）に遡る。**e-**（外へ）+ movere（動く）という構成で、心が内側から揺さぶられるという意味合いを持つ。もともとは「社会的な動揺・騒動」という意味で使われていたが、17世紀以降に「個人の感情・情緒」という現在の意味に変化した。

文学作品での使用例 / Literary Usage

Jane Austen『Sense and Sensibility』（1811年） — 理性（sense）と感情（sensibility）の対比が作品全体のテーマであり、emotionという概念が物語の中心に据えられている。
Charles Darwin『The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals』（1872年） — 人間と動物における感情の表現を科学的に考察した先駆的著作。
