歴史学の方法論や歴史の書き方、または歴史についての研究そのものを指す学術用語。歴史的な出来事そのものではなく、「歴史がどのように書かれ、解釈されてきたか」を扱う分野。

語源 / Etymology

ギリシャ語の historiographia に由来する。historia（歴史、調査）と graphia（書くこと）の合成語で、文字通り「歴史を書くこと」を意味する。ラテン語を経て近代ヨーロッパの諸言語に取り入れられ、英語では17世紀頃から学術的な文脈で使われるようになった。

E.H. Carr の *What Is History?*（1961年）は、歴史叙述の本質を問う古典的名著であり、historiography という概念を広く議論した代表的な作品。
Hayden White の Metahistory: The Historical Imagination in Nineteenth-Century Europe（1973年）は、歴史叙述における文学的構造を分析し、historiography の理論に大きな影響を与えた。
