語源 / Etymology

ラテン語の intermissio（中断、休止）に由来する。これは intermittere（間に送る、中断する）という動詞から派生した名詞で、接頭辞 **inter-**（間に）と mittere（送る、放つ）の組み合わせである。16世紀頃に英語に取り入れられ、主に演劇や公演の休憩時間を指す語として定着した。
