語源 / Etymology

ギリシャ語の prognostikos（予知に関する）に由来し、**pro-**（前もって）と gignōskein（知る）から構成される。ラテン語 prognosticum を経て中英語に入った。もともと医学用語として病気の経過を予測する意味で使われていたが、やがて広く「予兆の」「前兆となる」という意味でも用いられるようになった。
