語源 / Etymology
rare（まれな）という形容詞に副詞を作る接尾辞 -ly が付いた語。rare はラテン語の rarus（まばらな、めったにない）に由来し、古フランス語を経て16世紀頃に英語に定着した。「頻度が非常に低い」という意味で広く使われるようになった。
