語源 / Etymology

ラテン語の sacer（神聖な、神に捧げられた）に由来する。これが古フランス語の sacré を経て英語に入り、sacred（形容詞）となった。そこに名詞化の接尾辞 -ness が加わり、「神聖であること」という抽象的な状態を表す sacredness が生まれた。ラテン語の sacer には「聖なるもの」と「呪われたもの」という両義性があり、神に属するがゆえに人間が触れてはならないという意味合いを含んでいた。
