語源 / Etymology

ラテン語の transcendere（超えて登る）に由来する。**trans-**（超えて）と scandere（登る）が組み合わさった語で、中世ラテン語で transcendentalis という形容詞が生まれた。17世紀以降、哲学用語として広く使われるようになり、特にカントの哲学では「経験に先立つ認識の条件」を指す重要な概念となった。19世紀にはエマーソンやソローらによる超越主義（Transcendentalism）運動でこの語が広く知られるようになった。
