語源 / Etymology

中英語の時代に、接頭辞 un-（否定）と reasonable（道理にかなった）を組み合わせて生まれた語。reasonable はラテン語の rationabilis に由来し、ratio（理性、計算）がその根幹にある。つまり「理性に基づかない」という意味が語源から読み取れる。14世紀頃から英語で使われ始めた。

文学作品での使用例 / Literary Usage

ジェーン・オースティン『高慢と偏見』（Pride and Prejudice）：登場人物たちの不合理な振る舞いや偏見を描く場面で繰り返し使われている。
ジョージ・バーナード・ショー（George Bernard Shaw）：「理にかなった人間は自分を世界に適応させる。理に合わない人間は世界を自分に適応させようとする。それゆえ、すべての進歩は理に合わない人間に依存する」（*"The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
