柯希莫的心碎了，他不吃不喝，流着泪水在森林里久久地游荡。他象新生婴儿那样大声啼哭，以前成群地从这个神枪手猎人身旁逃走的小鸟们，现在靠近他，飞落在他周围的树梢上或者干脆就在他头顶上飞来飞去。麻雀叽叽喳喳，红额金翅鸟声声高啼，欧班鸠咕咕叫，鸫鸟啁啾，燕雀和柳莺鸣啭；从高处的树洞里跑出松鼠、睡鼠、田鼠，用它们的吱吱尖叫参加合唱，于是我哥哥就徜徉在一片哀鸣之中。
在他的心中有一个关于人类社会的理想。每次当他着手把人们联合起来，或者为了某些具体的目的如救火护林、打狼自卫，或者成立行会时，诸如锋利磨刀，光明制革之类的，他总是黑夜里把人们集合到森林中，围坐在一棵树下，他就在那棵树上演讲，总是产生出一种密谋的、宗派的、异端的气氛，在这种氛围中他的话题很容易从具体讲到一般，从关于从事一种手工技艺的简单规章制度浑然不觉地谈起建立一个公正、自由、平等的世界共和国的蓝图。
