語源 / Etymology

after（後）と math（刈り取り）の合成語。math は古英語の mæþ に由来し、草を刈る行為を意味していた。もともとは「最初の収穫の後に再び生えてくる草」を指す農業用語だったが、やがて比喩的に「ある出来事の後に残るもの・結果」という意味に転じた。17世紀頃から現在の抽象的な意味で広く使われるようになった。
