語源 / Etymology

ラテン語の appendere に由来し、**ad-**（～に）と pendere（吊るす、ぶら下げる）が組み合わさった語。もともと「何かにぶら下げる・付け加える」という意味で、16世紀頃から英語で「末尾に追加する」という現在の意味で使われるようになった。同じ語根から appendix（付録）や pendant（ペンダント）なども派生している。

文学作品での用例 / Literary Usage

Samuel Johnson の A Dictionary of the English Language（1755年）では、項目の末尾に補足を append する形式が多用されており、この語の学術的な使い方の典型例となっている。
Charles Darwin の On the Origin of Species（1859年）でも、後の版で新たな議論や反論への回答を章末に append する形で加筆が行われた。
