語源 / Etymology

ラテン語の locus communis（共通の場所）に由来する。これはギリシャ語の koinos topos（κοινὸς τόπος）の翻訳で、修辞学において「一般的な論点」や「共通の話題」を意味した。16世紀の英語で commonplace として定着し、「備忘録に書き留めておくべき注目すべき一節」という意味から、やがて「ありふれたもの、平凡なこと」へと意味が変化した。名詞の commonplace book（備忘録）という用法もここから生まれた。

文学作品での使用例 / Literary Usage

Arthur Conan Doyle の『The Adventure of the Red-Headed League』で、シャーロック・ホームズが「Life is infinitely stranger than anything which the mind of man could invent... If we could fly out of that window hand in hand... it would make all fiction with its conventionalities and foreseen conclusions most stale and commonplace.」と語る場面がある。
Hannah Arendt の『Eichmann in Jerusalem』（1963年）では、「the banality of evil」という概念と密接に関連する形で、悪の commonplace な性質が論じられている。
