語源 / Etymology

ラテン語の derivatio（流れを引くこと、転用）に由来し、動詞 derivare（流れをそらす、引き出す）から派生した。**de-**（～から）と rivus（小川）が組み合わさった語で、もともとは「水の流れを別の方向に引く」という意味だった。そこから比喩的に「起源からの派生」や「導き出すこと」という意味に広がった。中英語期にフランス語を経由して英語に入った。
