語源 / Etymology

ラテン語の elucidare（明らかにする）に由来する。e-（外へ）と lucidus（明るい、澄んだ）が組み合わさった語で、lucidus はさらに lux（光）に遡る。つまり、「光を当てて明らかにする」という原義を持つ。16世紀頃に英語に取り入れられた。

文学作品での使用例 / Literary Usage

John Locke の An Essay Concerning Human Understanding（1689年）では、人間の知識と理解の本質を論じる中で elucidation が用いられている。
Charles Darwin の On the Origin of Species（1859年）において、自然選択の理論の解明を述べる文脈で登場する。
Bertrand Russell の哲学的著作でも、論理や言語の分析における概念の elucidation として頻繁に使われている。
