中世ラテン語の phantasticus（想像上の）に由来し、さらにギリシャ語の phantastikos（想像する能力がある）から派生している。phantasia（想像、幻想）が語根であり、これは phainein（見せる、現れる）に遡る。英語では16世紀頃から使われ始め、fantastic の古い形として、より文学的・詩的な響きを持つ語として用いられてきた。現代では fantastic が一般的だが、fantastical はより幻想的で物語的なニュアンスを持つ。
