語源 / Etymology

中英語の hap（運、偶然）に由来し、古ノルド語の happ（幸運、偶然）から派生した。14世紀頃から「偶然に起こる」という意味で使われ始め、やがて「（何かが）発生する」という一般的な意味に広がった。もともと「運命的に起こる」というニュアンスを含んでいたが、現代では広く「起こる」という意味で日常的に使われている。

文学作品での使用例 / Literary Usage

William Shakespeare『Hamlet』 — "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." の前後で、予期しない出来事が happen するという文脈で多用されている。
