語源 / Etymology

ラテン語の instinctus（「衝動、霊感」）に由来する。これは instinguere（「駆り立てる、刺激する」）の過去分詞形で、in-（「中へ」）と stinguere（「突く、刺す」）から成る。16世紀頃に英語に入り、instinct に形容詞語尾 -ive が付いて「本能に基づく」という意味を持つようになった。
