語源 / Etymology

ラテン語の numerus（数）に由来する。これが中世ラテン語で numericus となり、さらに英語の接尾辞 -al が加わって numerical という形容詞が成立した。16世紀頃から英語で使われ始め、数学や科学の発展とともに広く普及した。同じ語根を持つ語に number、numeral、enumerate などがある。

文学作品での用例 / Literary Usage

チャールズ・ダーウィンの『種の起源』(On the Origin of Species, 1859) では、種の個体数や分布に関する議論の中で numerical が頻繁に用いられている。例えば、種の数的優位性（numerical preponderance）について論じている。
アイザック・ニュートンの『プリンキピア』(Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica, 1687) においても、数値的な計算や証明の文脈で numerical が使われている。
