    Modifications to PATH, or any environment variable, on the fly will not be permanent; permanent modifications should be done in an environment file, like .bashrc

    Modifications to PATH, or any environment variable, are on the fly and will not be permanent.

    这里用 on the fly 也不合适
    define on the fly: while in motion or progress; during the running of a computer program without interrupting the run.

    Modifications to PATH, or any environment variable, on the fly will not be permanent

    on the fly 可以理解为未落地,也就是 in the cache 。

    Modifications (to PATH, or any environment variable,) (on the fly) will not be permanent.

    on the fly 在这儿明显是介词短语做定语, to PATH or any environment variable 也是介词短语做定语,严格来说 or 前边的逗号是不能打的。
    Modifications (to PATH, or any environment variable), (on the fly) will not be permanent.

    to PATH, or any environment variable,
    to PATH (or any environment variable)
    to PATH -- or any environment variable --

on the fly 不该和 permanent 对比,也不适合修饰 modifications 。

    Modifications to PATH on the fly will not be permanent
    说是定语勉强能凑,但是放到最前面明显更合适,像

    也许按语法是合法的,但这并不是常见的做法

    即时...,作状语。
    举个例子, truecrypt 中用户对 container 的写入会被即时加密,所以说这种加密是 on the fly 地。

    @ryd994 那要用 On-the-fly modifications

    或者 Modifying PATH on the fly

    不过无所谓啦, native speaker 说话语法本来就不标准。不是有说 "How to spot a foreigner? They speak TOO correctly."

    我的意见是作定语,修饰 Modifications 。因为你不能把 on the fly 移到句末,这说明它是紧跟修饰对象的。

    不过楼主问的是翻译,为什么讨论起语法来了。。。

    on the fly 我所见的一般都翻译成“实时”或“即时”,但是在这里我觉得 3L 的“过程中”和 26L 的“运行时”都可以。

    http://cn.linguee.com/%E4%B8%AD%E6%96%87-%E8%8B%B1%E8%AF%AD/search?source=auto&query=on+the+fly

    这里列出的翻译也基本上是“即时”“实时”过程中“”动态“这几个。

    翻译不要太局限于原文的表达,意思表达到位才是第一位的,不然可能会让人看起来很困惑…

    我觉得是省略了从句 that are made , on the fly 是 made 的状语
    Modifications ([that are made] to PATH or any environment variable on the fly) will not be permanent; permanent modifications should be done in an environment file, like .bashrc

    on the fly 这里是介词短语作后置定语修饰 modifications ,没有语法问题, 1L 话题可以终结了。

    关于翻译,我觉得可以翻译成“动态”,主要让读者能够把前者与后面修改文件的方式区分开来,而避免让读者陷入抠字眼的误区,方便理解就可以了。
