語源 / Etymology

ラテン語の expendere（支払う、量り出す）に由来する。**ex-**（外へ）と pendere（量る、吊るす）が組み合わさった語で、もともとは「量って外に出す」＝「支払う」という意味であった。中世ラテン語の expenditura を経て、16世紀頃に英語に取り入れられた。同じ語根を持つ単語に expense や spend がある。
