語源 / Etymology

ラテン語の mentio（言及、述べること）に由来し、古フランス語の mencion を経て英語に入った。ラテン語の mens（心、思考）と語根を共有しており、「心に思い浮かべて口にする」という原義がある。14世紀頃から英語で使われている。

文学作品での用例 / Literary Usage

Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice：登場人物たちが他者の名前や噂を「mention」する場面が頻繁にあり、社交的なやり取りの中で情報がどう伝わるかを描写するのに使われている。
