語源 / Etymology

ラテン語の repraesentare（再び目の前に示す）に由来する。**re-**（再び）と praesentare（示す、提示する）が組み合わさった語で、14世紀頃に古フランス語 représentatif を経て英語に入った。「誰かの代わりに立つ者」「全体の特徴を示すもの」という意味が中心にある。

Thomas Paine の Common Sense（1776年）では、representative government（代議制政府）の概念が中心的なテーマとして繰り返し論じられている。
