ラテン語の auspicium に由来し、これは avis（鳥）と specere（見る）を組み合わせた語です。古代ローマでは、鳥の飛び方や行動を観察して神意を読み取る占い（鳥占い）が行われており、その占いの結果や前兆そのものを auspicium と呼びました。やがて「幸先の良いしるし」や「後援・保護」という意味へと広がりました。
