語源 / Etymology

ラテン語の civilis（市民の）に由来し、フランス語 civilisation を経て18世紀に英語に取り入れられた。語根の civis は「市民」を意味し、city（都市）や civil（市民の、礼儀正しい）とも同根である。もともと「野蛮な状態から脱して洗練された社会を築くこと」という意味合いを持っていた。
