語源 / Etymology

中世英語で、古フランス語の reparacion を経て、ラテン語の reparātiō（修復、回復）に由来する。語根は reparāre で、**re-**（再び）と parāre（準備する、整える）から成り、「再び元の状態に整える」という意味を持つ。14世紀頃から「損害の修復・償い」の意味で英語に定着した。
