語源 / Etymology

ラテン語の praesumptio（前もって取ること、仮定）に由来し、動詞 praesumere（前もって取る、当然と思う）から派生した。**prae-**（前に）と sumere（取る）の組み合わせである。古フランス語 presomption を経て、13世紀頃に英語に入った。法律用語としての「推定」という意味と、日常語としての「思い上がり」という二つの意味が早くから並存していた。
